CHAPTER XIII
THE ARRANGEMENTS
Nicholas and his Dad are leaving the yard now to go upstairs to the apartment when suddenly, his Dad stops and turns around for he thought he heard a someone calling him from a distance.
âWhat is it Dad?â
âI could have sworn I heard my name being called Nick, as he looks up into the Oak Tree.â
âReally Dad?â
âYes, Nick, itâs strange, probably just the wind.â
âHmm, maybe Dadâ, and Nicholas does not say a word on the experience that he too had today on hearing a voice calling his name.
They have finally left the yard, and his father is talking nervously sweating as they enter the apartment building and climb the stairs to the apartment. His conversation sounds confusing to Nicholas on the arrangements that he and his mother must organize today for George Tâs funeral and Nicholas asks, âWhatâs wrong with you Dad, are you feeling alright?â
Ed does not answer his son which frustrates Nicholas as they make their way to the landing, and as his father is about to open the apartment door Nicholas stops his Dad from going any further and shouts, âDad, listen to me!
âWhat is it Nick?â before his father could open the door, Nicholas grabs his arm, âDad, do what I do please,â and now places his hand on his heart and with the other hand holds it up over his head, and surprisingly his father is following his every move and says, Now Dad, first close your eyes, breathe in a deep breath, filling your chest and belly down to your toes, and then exhale slowly.â
âNow what Nick?â
âDad, did you do what I asked, be patient, that is what George T,â always says.
âIâm sorry Nick, but this is not for me, and George T is not here anymore, thanks anyway and walks into the apartment with Nicholas lagging behind him. As his father turns to look at his son, Nicholas is walking away from him towards the hall feeling rejected, and his father asks, âWhere are, you going Nickâ?
âIâm going to lay down on the couch Dad,â
His father is feeling rotten right now that he upset his son, and watches Nicholas holding his head shaking it as he walks into the living room, trying to forget what just happened.
Ed walks into the kitchen slapping his face once to snap out of feeling so ill from his own negative behavior and stands angry at himself as he looks out the window.
Although he sees a sunny day outside, Ed feels a dark cloud come over him. His breath has become short and out of rhythm. He is holding his chest and his heart palpitations cause him to clutch his shirt, and under his breath says, âWhat a complete jerk I am, I canât believe what I said to my son, he was only trying to make me feel better.â
Edâs words start to slur, and hopes he doesnât black out and quickly rubs his chest to get rid of the pressure that he is now feeling there.
